LASIK or Laser in situ Keratomileusis reshapes the cornea by using a laser beam to alter its curvature. It corrects vision by altering the refractive power of the eye by producing a calculated change in the curvature of the cornea. The image of the outside world in now focused sharply on the retina.
The procedure is relatively simple and comfortable. Eyes of the patient are made numb by instilling anesthetic eye drops. Using an instrument called microkeratome a thin flap of corneal tissue is raised. The excimer Laser then reshapes the cornea by removing a predetermined precise amount of tissue from inner cornea. The corneal flap is then repositioned back where it bonds without the need of stitches.

DAY OF LASIK SURGERY
You are only human, so ‘it’s not uncommon to feel anxious about your surgery. On your arrival at the Brar Eye Hospital every effort will be made to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. Our nursing staff will then familiarize you with the procedure.
The whole process from registration to surgery and final discharge takes approximately 3 hours. Prior to this day, we will furnish you with a list of do’s and don’ts
Please do not wear soft contact lenses for 3 days and hard or rigid gas permeable contact lenses for 1 week prior to the surgery date.
On the day of the surgery, please:-
PRK or LASIK surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure with no need for admission afterwards. You will be ushered to the preparation room in the laser suite.
You may be given a mild sedative or you may ask for one to help you relax. The nurse will then clean your eye and administer the anaesthetic eye drops to prepare you for the procedure. All the information required to correct your refractive error is uploded into the computer controlling the excimer laser to be used by the surgeon.
You will be positioned on a bed under the operating microscope where the procedure will take place. Throughout the procedure, your surgeon will be constantly talking to you, explaining every step so that you will know what to expect.
You might feel some discomfort and pressure on the eye but there will be no pain.
Both PRK and LASIK procedures are usually completed within 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes.
LASIK PROCESS – POST LASIK SURGERY CARE
After your surgery, every care is taken to make sure you are comfortable. Our nursing staff will be vigilant, attending to your needs. After your surgery is completed, eye drops will be administered to your eye and the eye will then be covered with a protective shield or goggle.
If you had LASIK surgery done, you will need to rest within the confines of the clinic for approximately 30 minutes. Your doctor will then check on your eye to ensure that the corneal flap is properly positioned before you leave the clinic.
Following your surgery remember these pointers:-

It is normal for you to experience some discomfort and tearing but that usually diminishes with the first day. Your doctor will want to examine your eye the next day after your procedure. You may then be able to return to work.
It is imperative on your part to keep all scheduled appointments and to use the eye drops as instructed in order to reduce the chances of any postoperative complication from occurring. The refractive power of your treated eye and your vision may vary for the first few weeks as part of the normal healing process. Your vision should progressively improve as your eye heals and stable vision is usually attained within the first 3 months. Once your vision is stable, the treatment is permanent.
If you are 18 or above, dissatisfied with your glasses or contact lenses and wish to get rid of them because of occupational or life style reasons, and meet certain visual and medical criteria, you are a candidate for LASIK. However, an examination by our LASIK experts can evaluate whether or not you are medically suited for LASIK.
This is a special form of LASIK in which the treatment parameters are customised for the particular patient, based not only on the refractive error, but also on the corneal map of the eye and other findings detected by special tests. This procedure tries to correct aberrations, maintains normal shape of the cornea and gives better night vision.
Light falling on the cornea [the front surface of the eye] has a smooth curvature- referred to as a "wavefront". As this smooth wavefront shape courses through the various optics of the eye, ocular aberrations [imperfections] are induced. It results in an irregular wavefront curvature reaching the retinal surface, which degrades the retinal image quality. An aberration-free eye would result in a smooth wavefront image on the retinal surface.
Wavefront-guide /adopted/customized LASIK, also referred to as "customized ablation" or custom LASIK performs corrections based on individual wavefront measurements.
Current refractive procedures such as traditional or standard LASIK correct lower order aberrations such as spherical and cylindrical numbers alone. However, higher order aberrations affect the quality of vision and may not significantly affect the vision as read on the chart. Excimer laser is Ultra Violet (UV) light energy of wavelength 193 microns. This laser breaks the chemical bonds within the molecules (photoablation) with minimal thermal damage to the surrounding tissues. Thus it is very precise and can remodel the cornea with an accuracy of more than a thousandth of a millimeter.
The effect of excimer laser on the cornea is very similar to grinding of a glass lens to change its refractive power.
